In 1980,
Pat Rutherford, an adoptive father,
located the birth mother of his three adopted children. That many years
ago there was no internet where you now can find adoption registries,
adoption chat rooms and adoption search links. Locating birth parents and
adoptees back then was extremely difficult.
To find help in searching today is as simple as going to "Google" and putting in adoption search
keywords such as: adoptee searching for birth mother; birthmother
searching for birth child; find my birth mother or adoption search and literally
thousands of links appear.
Back in the 80's, there was simply not a way to find a search company like
Worldwide Tracers and the Adoption Search Bureau - help was just not
available
Back in those days, when
we would order non ID from agencies, we would often get the non ID with
the Birth mother's or Adoptee's name simply marked out with black marker.
With the use of a chemical known to lift the black marker ink off of the
page without destroying what was underneath, the Name Was Almost Always
Exposed! TALK ABOUT EXCITING... we could not wait to get the non ID back
from the agencies. It was like we are now about Petitioning The Court - WE
CANNOT WAIT TO GET THE JUDGE'S DECISION BACK!
Most people think that to locate the birth mother
or adoptee after getting the name is a
"slam dunk"; not so with many cases. But after having the assistance of
some Adoption Sources that he found along the way, Pat was not only able
to locate the name of his children's mother, but also locate her. Actually
finding
the source was the most difficult thing that he has ever done, but it
also was the most rewarding. However, most importantly, Pat learned just about
everything he needed to know to help others locate their adoptees and
birth parents. Of course, every adoption search is different, but the
process of locating sources and information was basically the same. It was a
matter of knowing where to look and what to do with the information once
you get it.
The reunion in our
family was
incredible... it would take too long to go into detail about it. However,
after witnessing the reunion, another Rutherford family member decided to push
all fears
aside and have her father in law, Pat, search for her birthparents. While all reunions have different
dynamics to them, her reunion with her birth mother and birth father was a
blessing to everyone; especially in this case since the birthparents had
married some time after the adoption took place. She and my brother also
found out where their daughter's bright red hair came from! :-)
This is exactly how
Worldwide Tracers and the Adoption Search Bureau was born. Every search we
do comes from the same heart and soul that was used for our family; how
could it not?
We would never want
to talk anyone into doing a search, only you know when the time is right.

what your child looks like, what they have come to be and what their life

things you have dreamed of telling them. You will realize that all of that
time you spent wondering if they would reject you, was all wasted time.
That's been our reunion experience and the reunion experience of around
95% or more of our birth parents... and adoptees.
